Your Personal Bird House Feeders

If you are looking for child-friendly activities, why not try one involving DIY bird feeders? When you resort to this, you can help the kids know more about wood works and know more about the birds that live in their area. When it comes to this, you have an excellent bonding activity.

Apart from having stick glue, some nails, and some screws, this particular project will also call for some cut-outs made from cedar or plywood. When it comes to the assembly part, you will need a hammer, a drill, and a saw. Early on, you cannot determine the kind of birds that your bird feeders will attract when you set it up and this is why you should call the project a wild bird feeder. You can let your imagination run when planning on what your bird house feeder will would look like. It may be either as simple as illustrated in Figure 1 or you can add up more fixtures such as bird baths, nest box and other decorations.

You should make use of plywood that is 5/8 to 3/4 inch thick when it comes to this. If the material that you will use is too thin, it may not stand well against natural elements such as rain and strong winds. Do consider a slating design for the roof of the bird feeder so that the water can simply drizzle down.

Your drainage will be in the form of a couple of holes drilled out from the bottom. Use also galvanized screws or nails as this will last longer and will not rust easily. Another thing that can add to the durability of the bird feeder is the stick glue which you should use on all of the panels before you hammer or screw them in place. It is up to you to design the external part of the feeder afterwards. In order not to discourage the birds, be mindful of the colors that you use. In case that you will want to have some coating on your craft, try to use lead-free paints and choose light colors or hue. It is important, however, to coat your bird house feeder with linseed oil. If you opted to cover your wood project with paint, you will not need to coat it with linseed oil anymore. Place extra caution when using electrical equipment and sharp objects to avoid incidents or accidents. As much as possible, brief everyone with regard to the project's guidelines.

Three options are available when it comes to setting up bird feeders. It is possible to hang them up or place them near a window. In this case, you can also make a bird feeder pole. There are a number of benefits that can be attributed to bird feeder projects. Just remember to advise the kids not to chase or approach the birds while they are eating on the feeder as this may shoo them away. In this case, spend some time watching the birds.
